Surprised Obama Folks are not Piling into Quanta Services (PWR)

TweetThis
I am really surprised Quanta Services (PWR) is not exploding higher on the Obama infra theme; if there is one stock in America that seems to be at the center of all things Obama New Deal 2.0 it is Quanta Services. I wrote about this name in August [Aug 10: Quanta Services - Looking to Break Out] when infrastructure stocks were not hated - but it fills a different niche than the engineering and construction stocks we talk about often.

Quanta Services is a leading specialized contracting services company, delivering infrastructure network solutions for the electric power, natural gas, telecommunications and cable television industries. The company's comprehensive services include designing, installing, repairing and maintaining network infrastructure nationwide. Additionally, Quanta provides point-to-point fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure and leasing in select markets and offers related design, procurement, construction and maintenance services.

If you read a sampling of PWR's projects, it has Obama written all over it

  • a 210-mile, 500,000-volt electricity transmission project between Virginia and Pennsylvania known as trAILco;
  • an extension of the recently completed $190 million contract with the Lower Colorado River Authority;
  • An ongoing $750 million contract with Northeast Utilities (NU Quote - Cramer on NU - Stock Picks) to extend the electricity transmission lines in Connecticut; and
  • a portion of the expected $5 billion in expenditures that Texas plans to connect wind farms to the national grid, with California also expected to update plans for a similar $6.5 billion in grid expansion.
I'm keeping my eye close on this one; it has not yet broken out but on "thesis" alone - this should be the DryShips of Obama infrastructure. It's not cheap and has about $400M in debt, but those type of things don't matter once hedge funds ride in guns blazing on a thesis.

No position but monitoring

funny you mention this, i was just talking to some people about it today. i think the main reason its not moving is because what like 57% of its revs come from electrical infra. sure they'll get a piece, but obama seems to be focused on roads and bridges... physical transport stuff.

not to mention, you had gendell/tontine in there running a muck.

i really really like this name going forward, as i'm starting to build a list of plays for modernizing the electrical grid among other things.

ok ignore that comment i'm an idiot. obama will have some focus on the 'smart grid' so it should get a boost. they'll still get a piece of the work but the price action might be telling here a little bit. either way i'm gonna wait it out a lil bit.

sometimes I feel like I am listening to completely different speeches. He has talked about upgrading the grid often, and solar power :) but apparently only I heard it lol.

Looks like the run on solar we were expecting has finally arrived. You think it's just slow reaction (lack of conviction) to some of Obama's comments or hedgies rotating to the next badly-beaten-but-now-"hot" sector? Or maybe HAL9000 is just bored with running up infra/commods/retail for now and the ripe, untouched solar sector is next on its queue.

Yes finally. Could be retail traders - watch SOLF - thats the retail traders name. If its FSLR and SPRWA than its hedge fund running, as those are more institutional.

I bought a bit more today, hoping to sell 30-40% higher the next time Obama whispers solar ;)

I wrote about solar today in the APWR entry.
