It's Good to Have a Balanced Portfolio

TweetThis
Today is coal, solar, and infrastructure day. Some huge moves.

We continue to wait for the serious pullback that never comes. Somehow I think once the market most frustrates you, and you give up, and say "forget it, there will be no pullback" and toss all your chips onto the table.... only then will she crush you. ;)

I'm underweight these groups from my normal allocation - especially gnashing teeth watching Foster Wheeler (FWLT) which was a top 3 position two weeks ago fly away. The way the portfolio was set up 2 weeks ago, we'd be having a huge day... bah and humbug!

Days like this are when being at all conservative or prudent is frustrating.

Long Foster Wheeler in fund; no personal position

yes, very frustrated for me. i'm out jec, fwlt, stp, csiq yesterday because of not playing earning rule.

btw, i saw an article on seekingalpha that talks about FSLR using materials that will be in tight supply and expensive and hence will hurt the company. what do u think Mark?

Jerry "that guy" has been bashing FSLR for the last 200 pts based on the same thesis. Not working for him thus far

I just cant get behind FSLR for the valuation - but they have easiest story right now due to not being exposed to polysilicon. It will be interesting in 12-18 months when the worm turns how the solar valuations shakeout - will FSLR still get a premium or not. I anticipate China flooding the world with polysilicon by 2011. THan FSLR is going to have to compete on price and efficiencies which right now it lags. But its technology has been a boon to them during these times of extreme shortage.

It's a tricky industry.

why the move in coal today?

Not sure

Could be China related

that earthquake probably knocked out natural gas lines, petro, and coal mines. It was the biggest in many decades. That means more imports needed from other countries...

someone just sent this so it looks like my guess is correct

I have to give you props on WLT. Up 31% since you mentioned buying it not long ago. I'm also still holding FWLT and LDK since they both look like pretty good companies and I'm not too much of a daily trader. Although, WLT is looking like a sell soon and wait for a later point to enter in again...
